From dirt to pavement and sun to snow, Claude Gariépy has helped capture a wide variety of racing events through his role as a cameraperson for the past 50 years. Born in Quebec, Gariépy moved to Ontario in the mid-1970s to film car races. His role increased when the industry transitioned to video, covering countless racing events in the decades to follow.
In the 1980s, Gariépy was a cameraperson for races in Can-Am, Rothmans Porsche, Firestone Firehawk, Formula Atlantic, Honda Michelin Series, Players/GM Series, and the Canadian Superbike Series. He continued capturing some of those same series into the 1990s, when he also covered a dog sled race, Hydroplane boat racing, snowmobile racing, 1600 Series, Magna Enduro Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Gariépy captured about 200 rally racing events in Canada and the U.S. between 1991 and 2015, while also doing work on World Rally broadcasts. He covered the Targa Newfoundland from 2010 to 2018 and has captured about 350 CASCAR and NASCAR Canada Series races between 1994 and 2025. He’s also done camera work for broadcasts of the Porsche GT3 Cup Canada, Canadian dirt racing, FEL Sports Car Championship Canada, FEL Radical Cup Canada and Nissan Sentra Cup over the past decade.
Gariépy’s shots have been visible across the country on networks including TSN, RDS, CTV, CBC and Sportsnet. He’s worked as the lead technician for producers such as Lawrence Partington, Jim Robinson and Joel Robinson, while also holding a role with the Player’s team, documenting their Champ Car/CART/IndyCar journey for TSN and RDS. The veteran cameraperson became an instructor at Loyalist College, in Belleville, ON, to share his knowledge with the next generation, while continuing to be a story teller of Canadian racing through his ongoing role at the track.
