INDUCTED 2025 - COMPETITOR

Jacques Bienvenue competed in regional and international road racing events from the late 1960s to early 1990s, while also starting a journalism career that continues today. Bienvenue started out in regional races at Mont-Tremblant before winning the C Production championship at the Canadian Nationals in 1971. He found success on the world stage in 1975, finishing eighth overall and fourth in the GTO class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while finishing runner-up in the 12 Hours of Sebring and fourth overall in the 24 Hours of Daytona. He’s also competed in several SCCA/GT3 races during his career.

Bienvenue won the inaugural Volant Quebecois in 1976 over a field of drivers that included Gilles Villeneuve. He won the D Production championship at the 1977 Canadian Nationals and won consecutive GT1 Quebec regional titles in 1977 and 1978. He finished runner-up in the Canadian (Molyslip) Endurance Championship in 1978 before winning that title in 1979 and 1981. He also won the GT2 title at the Canadian Nationals in 1985 and 1987.

Overall, Bienvenue won 13 Quebec and nine Canadian road racing championships, mostly in the 1970s. He later raced in the Rothmans Porsche Turbo Cup and Firestone Firehawk Endurance Racing Championship before stepping away in 1991. He then briefly came out of retirement in 1995, finishing third in the Neon Challenge at the Molson Indy Vancouver.

Bienvenue kept busy outside of the race car, beginning his career as an automotive journalist in 1979. He’s written for the Journal de Montréal as a columnist since 1980, including contributions to their automotive guide. He’s also worked for the Le Monde de l’Auto magazine. He won the 1988 Paul Frère trophy for his dual roles, with the European automotive press award given to a French-speaking journalist who’s also experienced success behind-the-wheel.
