ROSS BENTLEY

INDUCTED 2025
COMPETITOR / BUILDER / SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTOR

Growing up in a motorsports family, Ross Bentley spent decades behind-the-wheel in road racing competition, while later writing a series of books about racing techniques and strategies. Bentley won 11 amateur racing championships early in his career. He competed in the CAMRA Super-Modified series in 1977 before running in CASC BC Formula Ford, where he won championships in 1979 and 1980. He raced in Formula Atlantic in the early 1980s, made four Trans-Am starts in 1986 and won every Westwood and Portland endurance race between 1987 and 1990.

Born in Vancouver, BC, Bentley made his CART debut in his hometown race, the 1990 Molson Indy Vancouver. He made 25 starts in CART through 1994, mostly with Dale Coyne Racing. He then shifted gears to sports cars, making 26 starts in the Grand-Am series, which includes its predecessor United States Road Racing Championship (USRRC), between 1998 and 2010.

Bentley won the GT3 class championship in his first USRRC season, recording two wins and four podiums in five races in 1998. He ran only select events in the seasons that followed, recording four more podium finishes, including the SRII class win in the 2003 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. That class win came by finishing seventh overall. He also made six ALMS starts between 1999 and 2002, with a podium finish.

Away from the driver’s seat, Bentley has focused on passing down his knowledge to the next generation. He started a driving school at his local Westwood track and became an established performance coach with Bentley Performance Systems/Speed Secrets, a consulting business that offers coaching and workshops for individuals, teams and organizations. He’s authored/co-authored 11 books between 1998 and 2017, including a series of seven Speed Secrets books focused on racing techniques and strategies.
