Vic Parsons had a varied career in motorsports, racing across eastern Canada and the U.S. in parts of four decades. Parsons started out in 1960, winning Rookie of the Year in the Hobby division at Pinecrest Speedway. He won races at Pinecrest and Stittsville the following year before winning big money specials aboard a Modified in Ontario and New York State in 1962. He raced a Late Model at Pinecrest in 1963, recording multiple feature victories, before finishing runner-up in Late Model points at CNE Speedway in 1964, while also competing in Lancaster, NY.
Parsons raced on Fridays at Barrie Speedway and Saturdays at Pinecrest in 1965, winning a track championship at Barrie. He continued winning races aboard a Late Model over the following two seasons, competing at tracks in Ontario, Indiana and New York. He then tried his hand at something without wheels, winning a Hydroplane boat race at Niagara on the Lake, ON in 1968.
Parsons competed throughout the Northeast from 1969 to 1972, winning big money features and getting an opportunity at stock car racing’s highest level, finishing ninth in his NASCAR Cup Series debut at North Wilkesboro in 1972. He ran 18 of 28 races in the Cup Series the following year, recording six top-10 finishes and ending up 30th in points. This included a 10th-place finish in the 1973 Daytona 500, which remains the best result by a Canadian in the prestigious event.
Parsons returned to Ontario, racing in the Export A Series at Cayuga, Delaware and Windsor from 1974 to 1976 before stepping away from the driver’s seat. He later made a comeback in motorsports, competing at Sunset Speedway in 1998 before winning a track championship at Peterborough Speedway in 2002 at the age of 63.
